I conducted my PhD thesis with the title "A 3D camera-based system concept for safe and intuitive use of a surgical robot system" at the IAR-IPR at the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) under the supervision of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Heinz Wörn with Prof. Paolo Fiorini acting as second reviewer. The thesis was defended on 09.06.2016. The printed version is available since November 2016.

During my time at IAR-IPR, we also developed OP:Sense, a modular research platform for robot-assisted surgery (which is often referred to in my thesis). The first of the following documents provides information and references on research conducted within OP:Sense, whereas the other documents and videos present the system in a more general way.
While working on my PhD thesis, I received the following awards:
Best Live Demo Prize | Surgical Robot Challenge 2015 at Hamlyn Symposium on Medical Robotics | London, UK | 2015 |
Best Paper Award: Finalist | 12th International Conference on Informatics in Control, Automation and Robotics | Colmar, France | 2015 |
Best Oral Presentation Award | International Conference on Robotics and Computer Vision (ICRCV) | Beijing, China | 2014 |
Best Video Award: 2nd Place | IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Biomimetics (ROBIO) | Phuket, Thailand | 2011 |
Best Paper Award | 9. Jahrestagung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Computer- und Roboterassistierte Chirurgie (CURAC) | Düsseldorf, Germany | 2010 |
In addition to presentations of papers at various conferences, I delivered the following talks:
OP:Sense – A rapid prototyping research platform for surgical robotics | 3rd International Workshop on Medical and Service Robots | Lausanne, Switzerland | 2014 |
Surgical Robotics at KIT – the OP:Sense platform: Conceptual research for modular, human-centred surgical robotics | IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) | Karlsruhe, Germany | 2013 |
Operation Room Supervision for Safe Robotic Surgery with a multi 3D-Camera Setup | IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) | San Francisco, US | 2011 |
